Frater got an airing at Quake Map
Hotel, which obviously meant I was doing something right! It's also a pretty
good player, although some folks have stated it feels a little bare and
unfinished in places.
Sandstorm was the first DM map I
was satisfied with. Unique looks helped, and although the lighting is a
bit odd and the weapons're not balanced very well it is a fun map to play.
Glitch is a formal-feeling, if slightly
"used" map. Actually, formal seems to be a style I'm rather better at than
some others (eg. Grader Spader).
3. Which is your least favourite
level, if you think you have one!.
Of mine? Well, Brodmann's Area 8:
It's overlarge, understocked and too easy to get lost in - you spend lots
of time going round in circles!
4. What map editor do you use?
Worldcraft 1.6. I think you can't
register anymore though :(
I actually have a whole raft of tools
I use for texturing and stuff, see my site.
5. What level editing tips do
you have for other authors?
Well, as peej told me, learn from
the masters! Look a little deeper, not so much at the texturing as the
layout, flow and so on. Some stonking maps like Ghandi's "Naked Cows on
Stage" are really remarkably simple, but the implementation is the thing.
Also, try to stick in two Rocket
Launchers minimum. Folks don't appear to like it if one guy can hog the
Biggest Badass Boom Stick.
Actually, I've a whole pageful at
my place. :)
6. How long have you been making
Quake/Quake 2 maps.
Since late 1997, when my parents
bought this computer and I bought Quake.
7. What do you enjoy about making
maps.
The challenge of making the place
feel real (within certain limits) while still running as fast as possible
:)
Also, making sure (in DM) that there's
enough continuity. One of the things I keep in mind is "no gimmicks" -
RCDM2 (The Ancestral Domain) had a gimmick where you had to get wet to
get seriously loaded! Never again!
8. What plans you have for the
future, with map making in mind.
(Say if you got a job in the
industry related to map making).
One of these days I'll complete the
PROGS.DAT for Operation Urth Majik: my collaborative Quake SP project.
See the
site for details. Cheshire, DaMaul, Vigilante, Borsato, Vondur are
in, to name a few of the contributors. This mutha is gonna RAWK!!
9. Which is your favourite game
out of Quake and Quake2 and why?
Quake - it's incredibly flexible,
and it'll run on my dinky Cyrix box. Hexen II could be a goer if I would
get off my ass and buy it :), but Quake II and Heretic II run too damn
slow, I know from experience.
10. Some self publicity, if you
have a website whats it called and whats it address
OK, the best
place to get infected by my maps is the Quake Plague Vector, which you
can reach through http://come.to/cruickro
- as well as find out a few other things about myself.
