I'm watching you...

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. If I keep on like this both Cheshire and Misyu will stare me to death with their evil glares.

Anyway, there will be an update tomorrow and most probably Feb's irc stats.

Now I have been busy working on something. Its coming along very nicely and it is probably time to explain what is it.

Over a month ago Ninja mentioned he was after a Quake front-end. excessus was working on one a long time ago but was unable to finish it. So I said I'd write one. As is the way with these things it grew to be a much bigger project than originally planned.

However, the basic idea was to combine your standard front-end features with the ability to store map details, i.e. keep a map catalogue. At the moment it supports Quake, but I intent on adding Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena support as well. Its called QLP, which is short for Q Launcher Pro.

The good news is that its almost done. The bad news is that its probably going to be at least a week until I get chance to finish it.

Just to give you an idea of what it looks like, here are a couple of screen shots.

The main screen.

The image browser.

There is a lot more to it than what I've said here, but I don't want to give everything away now do I :).

Looks damn fine. I'm assuming that an unlimited amount of maps can be loaded, as well as screen shots for each map? custom map switching and the like?

You can pick multiple maps and it will run through them in circulation. It also works on what maps are in your map directory. Not that you can tell from the top screen shot but I have 750+ Quake maps. We also hope to have a ton of map details and screen shots available for download when the program is done, so people can just import in our settings.

There is also the ability for authors to automatically zip up their maps with text file, screen shot and whatever map info they've put in so people can pull that in when they get the map.

#4 Bot support?

Will it support the Omicron Bot or any bot for that matter?

For Quake and Quake 2 there will not be built in support in QLP. Its far easier to set up the bots in game and to be honest I'm not sure how to set up the bots at command line :). Can't say I've ever looked into doing that. If anyone has any info on that then email me.

As a side note, you can apply Omicron bot routes (the .ent files) to a BSP.

For Q3A however I will be putting in support to pick bots before you run.

#6 Thumbs

I also assume that the screenshots are only very small? perhaps only about 100x60? Just enough to give the map a small signature I guess...

I will be very surprised if this ends up as shareware... Looks too good to be free.

Yes, on the image browser they are just thumbnails. Can't remember off hand what size they are but you double click on a picture to see them in their normal size, ie 640x480 or whatever.

I have no intention of making it shareware. Maybe I'll do it like mIRC where by if you like it you can give me all your money :P. I doubt it though as I'm only doing it as a favour for someone at the end of the day.

I love the way you can drag the window to different sizes and the image on the screen squishes or stretches to fit. Thats the best feature!!! :)

/me goes to find other useless stuff with Quake related programs
